When David Saxe was a little boy, he’d share in a bowl of cereal with his father every morning and watch his favorite TV show, the kitschy, simplistically imaginative Japanese sci-fi series Ultraman. Saxe was fascinated by the show’s simple production and its heroic central character, a futuristic space alien who battled all variety of otherworldly monsters and menacing figures. The only boy and youngest child in a family of three kids, David was also enamored of his father, something of a heroic figure who always made sure to spend this quality TV time with his son.
The era is ending for supersized Las Vegas nightclubs, as intimacy and sophistication are the new buzzwords for 2012. On Thursday, I took preview tours of the new, luxurious jewel box lounge and nightspot Hyde in the Bellagio and RPM at the Tropicana.
On Wednesday, Dec. 21, Mayor Carolyn Goodman officially proclaimed Jan. 2, 2012 "deadmau5 Day" in the city of Las Vegas. The date marks the launch of an exclusive partnership between Wynn Las Vegas and the electro/house DJ from Canada. Deadmau5 will debut his residency on New Year's Eve at XS Nightclub and will continue to play at both Encore Beach Club and XS through 2012.

And always with a smile on his face. Redfoo, one half of the electro-pop duo LMFAO, is the gregarious host of Marquee’s most outrageous monthly bash, Party Rock Mondays. Each month since January, the “Foo” (a.k.a. Stefan Kendal Gordy) and his crew have taken over the chic spot and transformed it into a veritable zoo of shots, champagne showers and the most energetic crowd on the Strip as they release their inner party-rocker. Most 22-year-olds spend their nights going to local bars and frat parties. DJ Jesse Marco, on the other hand, spends his time traveling city-to-city, rocking fashion shows, private parties and nightclubs from Switzerland to South Beach. The New York native got his start at the tables at age 12, worked for the iconic Mark Ronson’s record label, and was briefly mentored by the late DJ AM. Marco is on his way up in producing—check out his track “Daddy Cool” released in February—and will become one of our own residents appearing every couple of weeks at 1 Oak beginning New Year’s Eve.

Major operators such as Wynn, the Venetian and even the storied Caesars Palace have made their clubs integral to their overall operations. Meanwhile, such resorts as the Palms and Hard Rock Hotel have built themselves almost from the ground up as party destinations. When clubs work, they generate buzz, foot traffic, ancillary casino gaming and food-and-beverage spending. But when they don’t, they can be a drag on a property.
